Best towers to climb in Prague, Czech Republic

Prague is commonly referred to as the ‘City of a Thousand Spires’, as it is filled with magnificent baroque towers, cathedrals and medieval churches, topped with beautiful gold-tipped spires. I spent my time in the Czech capital not only exploring the city from the ground, but also venturing up the beautiful towers. They each have a few hundred steps to climb to the top but the views are totally worth it! Continue reading for my recommendations for the best towers to visit in Prague, Czech Republic…

1. Old Town Bridge Tower

This is the place to come for the best views of Prague. The Old Town Bridge Tower is situated at the end of Charles Bridge, closest to the Old Town. Built in the 14th century, it has become one of the most stunning gothic buildings in the world.

The tower viewing gallery at the top offers breathtaking views of the Czech capital and the Vltava River.

2. Old Town Hall Tower

The Old Town Hall Tower was built in the 14th century and the entire building is adorned with figural and ornamental decorations. The southern side of the tower is home to Prague’s most famous astronomical clock, dating back to the beginning of the 15th century.

For the best view over the Old Town Square, climb to the top of the Old Town Hall Tower – the birds-eye view of the city is incredible!

3. Klementinum Astronomical Tower

The Klementinum is the second largest building complex in the Czech capital, after Prague Castle. You can visit this magical building on a guided tour. It is home to the Baroque Library, the Meridian Hall, and the Astronomical Tower. Astronomical and meteorological observations have been held in the tower since the middle of the 18th century.

This is the place to visit for a unique view of the historical centre of Prague. This window view that I stumbled across in the Astronomical Tower is one of my favourite spots in the city…

4. Lesser Town Bridge Tower

The Lesser Town Bridge Tower is located at the other end of the Charles Bridge, closest to Mala Strana. It offers another unbeatable view of Charles Bridge and the city, from a different perspective.

You can purchase a combined ticket which includes entrance to both of the Charles Bridge Towers (Old Town Bridge Tower and the Lesser Town Bridge Tower).

5. Petrin Lookout Tower

Petrin Tower was built in 1891 and was inspired by the Eiffel Tower in Paris. This 63.5m tall building is one of the most iconic landmarks in the Czech Republic. It is located on Prague’s Petrin Hill and offers the city’s highest viewpoint.

I reached the tower by hiking the hill but there is an optional cable car that you can also take. There are 299 steps to the top of the observation deck or a lift which comes with a small fee.
