Top places to visit on your first trip to Bosnia and Herzegovina

Bosnia and Herzegovina is the jewel of the Balkans, filled with incredible natural beauty, buzzing culture, a rich history and affordable prices. I took this trip from Dubrovnik to Bosnia and Herzegovina and visited the places I’ve mentioned in this blog post. Whether you decide to take a tour or visit on your own, these are my recommendations on the best places to visit on your first trip to this incredible country.

Kravica Waterfalls

The breathtaking Kravica Waterfalls is a large tufa cascade on the Trebižat River, in the karstic heartland of the Herzegovinian region of Bosina and Herzegovina. It is one of the country’s most beautiful natural sites.

Mostar Old Town

Mostar is a charming old city and is a cultural UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s filled with 16th century Ottoman-style buildings, mosques, bridges and villages.

Mostar Old Bridge

The Mostar Old Bridge crosses the River Neretva and it has famously been heralded as an example of Ottoman design and a world-renowned structure during the Bosnian War. It’s a symbol of international cooperation and represents diverse ethnic and religious communities.

Whilst I was there, I witnessed the world-famous Mostar bridge jump – traditionally, it has been a tradition in Bosnia and Herzegovina that every 16-year-old boy has to jump off the Mostar Old Bridge to be an accepted member of the town.

Today, this bridge attracts spectators and adrenaline junkies willing to follow this world-famous tradition and jump off the bridge.

Neum

Neum is a scenic resort town. It’s the only town on Bosnia and Herzegovina’s coastline, making it the country’s only access point to the Adriatic Sea.
