Top tips for travelling to Qatar during Ramadan

One of my favourite aspects of travelling is experiencing different cultures and visiting Qatar during Ramadan has given me the perfect opportunity to embrace the local traditions.

Here are my top tips if you are travelling to Qatar (or any other Muslim country) during this holy month.

1. Tourists cannot eat or drink in public areas during daylight hours – this includes drinking water or chewing gum.

2. Many restaurants, shops and museums are closed during fasting hours, so it’s best to check before heading out.

3. During Ramadan in Qatar, no alcohol is served anywhere in the country, even the 5* hotels which are permitted to serve alcohol the rest of the year.

4. The roads are congested in the evenings, with most traffic between 17.30-19.30.

5. Modest attire is the norm in Qatar (eg. covering shoulders and knees), so be mindful of what you wear, not just during Ramadan, but all year round.

6. One of the traditions in Qatar during Ramadan is the release of cannons at sunset, signalling the end of the fasting day. The most popular spots to watch the firing of the cannons are Souq Waqif, Katara Cultural Village, Lusail Boulevard and Souq Wakrah – my favourite was in Souq Waqif!

7. Even if you’re not fasting, a great way to experience the local culture is by joining the iftars and suhoors around the city. Most restaurants and hotels in Doha have special iftar and suhoor menus alongside their a la carte menus.

Ramadan Kareem to everyone observing ✨
