Ultimate London day out – Greenwich edition
Greenwich is one of the prettiest, greenest and most historic areas of London, located south of the River Thames. Visiting this UNESCO World Heritage Site is the perfect day out for everyone, just a stone’s throw away from the city. Here are my top picks for the best things to do when in Greenwich…
Start the day at the UK’s largest observatory, which is the historic home of British astronomy. You can stand on the world-famous Prime Meridian Line, which is used as the basis of the world’s time zones – this is the origin of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). Stand with one foot in the eastern hemisphere and one in the west, where east meets west at 0° longitude!
You can also walk in the footsteps of royal astronomers, learn about the wonders of space and see one of the largest telescopes in the world.
The Royal Observatory also offers one of the best vantage points, with breathtaking views across London.
Walk along Greenwich Park to the Cutty Sark – this is the last surviving British tea clipper from the 19th century, which was originally built for the China tea trade and launched in 1869. Climb aboard the historic ship and discover what it was like to sail the seas – stand on the main deck and take the helm at the ship’s wheel…
The 17th century Queen’s House is the first Classical building constructed in England. It was once a Royal residence and is home to one of the prettiest interiors and exteriors in London, and the iconic circular Tulip Staircase.
