Top things to see and do in Slovenia

Tucked away in the heart of Europe, Slovenia is a destination that left me speechless and has easily become one of my favourite countries. During my week, I explored many of the natural gems including Lake Bled, Lake Bohinj and Triglav National Park, all of which are nothing short of magical. Ljubljana, the charming capital city, also offers a mix of history, culture, and modernity. Whether you’re exploring the city or relaxing by the lakes, here are the top things to see and do in Slovenia.

Lake Bled

Nestled amidst the Julian Alps, Lake Bled captivates with its crystal-clear waters, emerald green landscape, and an iconic island topped with a picturesque church, offering a tranquil escape into nature’s serenity. I spent time walking around the lake and hiked up to Bled Castle to get a beautiful panoramic view.

No trip to Lake Bled is complete without indulging in its most iconic dessert, the legendary Bled cream cake, known locally as blejska kremšnita. It’s a dreamy stack of golden, flaky puff pastry layered with rich vanilla custard and light, whipped cream, finished with a delicate dusting of powdered sugar.

Lake Bohinj

Unlike its more famous sibling Lake Bled, Bohinj is quieter, wilder, and brimming with untouched beauty. The lake’s glassy surface mirrors the towering peaks around it, and whether you’re kayaking at sunrise or just sitting on a rock watching the clouds roll over Mount Triglav, there’s a sense of stillness here that’s hard to find elsewhere. It’s the perfect spot to slow down, breathe, and reconnect with the raw, natural world.

Triglav National Park

Triglav National Park is Slovenia’s only national park, but it more than earns its title with a breathtaking blend of dramatic alpine peaks, emerald rivers, and ancient forests. It is named after Mount Triglav, the country’s highest mountain.

Funicular and Ljubljana Castle

The historic funicular ride ascends steeply to Ljubljana Castle, offering breathtaking panoramic views of Slovenia’s capital, while the castle itself stands as a majestic symbol of Slovenia’s rich history and cultural heritage.

Ljubljana is a dream for street photography. Its charming old town is a canvas of pastel facades, cobblestone streets, and ivy-draped balconies, while the Ljubljanica River peacefully flows through the city.
