The best ways to continue travelling from home

This continues to be an unprecedented time for travellers, with countries in lockdown, borders closed and flights cancelled. With the new strains of COVID-19 dampening any optimism of travelling abroad in the near future, I have compiled a new list for 2021, on how you can keep your wanderlust alive, from the comfort of your own home.

Last year, I wrote a series of ‘travel from home‘ posts:

Now, here are some more things you can do while you wait for travel restrictions to be lifted:

Learn a language

It is fair to say that you will probably have more time at home now during the pandemic, than you will at any other point in your life. With the extra time, why not start learning a new language? You could teach yourself through watching online tutorials or making use of the many language apps available. Learning the basics of a new language will come in so handy when you are out and about on your upcoming adventures!

Go on a virtual walk with friends or family in another country

If you travel regularly, chances are you have got friends and family all over the world. Contact them whilst either sides are out having a walk – this is a nice way to catch up, whilst seeing a different environment. This will give you a break from what you have been used to, after just staying in your local area for so long.

Give your home a travel makeover

Having travel themed items around your home can definitely fuel your wanderlust! For me, this includes have a travel scratch map on one side of my bedroom and all the keyrings I have collected from my adventures on the adjacent wall. I have a globe in the kitchen, together with travel fridge magnets and souvenirs from around the world, including a mini Burj Khalifa from Dubai, an El Jem model from Tunisia and an Oscar from Los Angeles!

If you do not have any travel themed products at home, maybe have a look online to see if there are any products you like or think about what kind of souvenirs you want to start collecting on your next adventures!

Create a 2021 travel wishlist

There is hope that the travel world will reopen later in 2021 and we will be able to recommence our adventures! With that thought in mind, it is worth starting to create a travel wishlist of where you really want to go this year – I am definitely going to do this! Once you have done that, take a look at how to create the perfect holiday itinerary and start planning your next trips.

Watch a travel documentary

My favourite is An Idiot Abroad, a British travel documentary comedy series broadcast on Sky One. Karl Pilkington is sent to different countries in each episode by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. In some he goes to the seven wonders of the world, in others he ticks activities off his bucket list. The main thing is that the show is hilarious! He always departs London with his packets of Monster Munch and has a unique outlook on the world – definitely worth a watch!
