2020 – How I rang in the new year and new decade

London always knows how to ring in a new year in style. Since I was little, I’ve always watched London’s dazzling fireworks display on TV –  it’s the best in the world – but I’ve never been able to go and see them in person…until this year.

2020 is a big year. It’s a new decade. So if there was any year I went to see the fireworks from the prime spot right opposite the London Eye, it had to be this year. And I am so glad I did!

The six hours waiting time flew by thanks to good company, lots of laughs, cool music and yummy food!

As the time approached 12am, the crowds got louder, everyone was singing and dancing, and the 100,000 people were counting down and waiting for the hands to both align at 12 on Big Ben!

The 15-minute display was truly spectacular. It was the best night and definitely a once in a lifetime experience to be able to ring in the new year from the best spot in the city!

If you’re thinking of going next year, here’s a few tips to help it be your best NYE:

  1. The event opens at 7pm so try and get there as soon as possible to be guaranteed a good spot to watch the fireworks.
  2. Wear lots of layers to keep warm, and bring your hat, scarf and gloves. This will make standing outside for hours in the cold weather manageable.
  3. Bring your own food and drinks, including a thermos! There are food stands located sporadically but it’s safer to bring your own than trying to make your way through all the crowds and then risking losing your spot.
  4. Bring your tripod if you want…it’s not prohibited.
  5. Enjoy the free tubes on the way home but bear in mind that the nearby stations including Westminster, Embankment and Waterloo all close. The nearest station that’s open is Victoria.
  6. During the fireworks display, take photos but also take time to enjoy the moment!
