Top things to see and do in the Lake District

The Lake District is one of the UK’s most spectacular destinations, combining dramatic mountains, tranquil lakes, charming villages and winding country roads. Whether you’re looking for breathtaking scenery, peaceful walks or a taste of local tradition, there’s plenty to discover throughout England’s largest national park. From taking a short trip across Lake Windermere to exploring the quaint streets of Grasmere and Ambleside, these are my recommendations for the top things to see and do in the Lake District.

Lake Windermere

No trip to the Lake District feels complete without experiencing Lake Windermere, England’s largest natural lake. You can take a short boat trip across its peaceful waters, enjoying spectacular views of the surrounding hills and countryside. Driving along the roads around the lake is another highlight, with exhilarating stretches of road and plenty of opportunities to stop, take in the scenery and capture photos along the way.

Blea Tarn

Blea Tarn is one of the best places to experience the Lake District on foot. Nestled among the dramatic Langdale Valley, the tarn is surrounded by rugged fells and breathtaking scenery. You can enjoy a walk around the tarn, taking in peaceful views of the water and surrounding mountains from different viewpoints. There are also hiking routes through the Langdales, often described as “Little Switzerland” because of their dramatic and diverse scenery – this was my favourite thing to do! It’s an ideal spot for hikers looking to immerse themselves in the spectacular landscape.

Grasmere

Grasmere Village is a charming place to explore, with picturesque streets and beautiful 19th-century architecture. The village also has a strong connection to the poet William Wordsworth, whose grave can be found at St Oswald’s Church. No visit to Grasmere would be complete without a stop at Sarah Nelson’s Grasmere Gingerbread. You can follow the irresistible smell into the shop and sample the famous traditional gingerbread – a delicious local treat with a long history.

Ambleside

Ambleside is another picturesque Lake District town well worth exploring. You can wander through its maze of twisting streets, browse independent and picturesque shops, or stop at one of its cafés to soak up the atmosphere. Surrounded by beautiful countryside, Ambleside also provides plenty of opportunities to explore the scenery and enjoy walks through the surrounding landscape.
